Clinton sophs fall

CLINTON -- Davenport Central built a 21-0 lead in the first half, then held off a Clinton comeback attempt in the second half to beat the River Kings 27-13 in sophomore football Friday at Coan Field.

The Kings (1-2) pulled within 21-13 in the third quarter. Michael Peters recovered a fumble in the end zone for the first score, and Theo Harris caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from freshman Johnny Sullivan for the other score.

“We came out in the second half, got a big turnover in the end zone, recovered our onside kick and got a big pass play for a TD,” Clinton coach Mike Griswold said. “Our defense played outstanding for the rest of the game. We just couldn’t make the plays offensively to win the game. We saw some major improvements this week, and feel like we have another good shot to win this week down at Muscatine (this Friday).”

Another freshman, Walker Chapman, led Clinton with 60 yards rushing on 16 carries.

“We came out of the gates a little slow tonight, and Central really took advantage of our early mistakes,” Griswold said. “We couldn’t get much going offensively in the first half, but we knew there were some things that we could take advantage of.”
