Queens go 2-2 at North Scott

ELDRIDGE — Clinton High ran into some steep Mississippi Athletic Conference competition when it traveled to the North Scott Invitational on Saturday. The River Queens came out 2-2 and improved to 12-4 on the season.

Defending Class 5A state champion Bettendorf won the tournament without dropping a set. The Bulldogs’ run included a 21-11, 21-16 sweep of Clinton despite a 14-assist performance by Clinton’s Monique Harris and eight kills from Elle Tubbs.

The River Queens dropped their other match to Quincy (Ill.), falling 21-18, 21-11. Harris had eight digs, eight assists, four kills and three aces in the loss, while Erin Wenzel added five kills and Tubbs chipped in four.

Clinton swept the hosting Lancers 21-12, 21-17 behind serving by Tubbs and Harris. Both players finished with four aces apiece, while the River Queens racked up 35 digs as a team. Harris had 10 digs to go along with her nine assists. Wenzel and Hannah Dehner had six and five digs, respectively.

Against Davenport West, the River Queens got solid overall performances in the front row leading to a 21-13, 21-6 sweep. Wenzel tallied six kills, Harris four (with a .571 kill efficiency) and Tubbs and sophomore McKenzie Petersen with three each. Again, Tubbs and Harris had four aces each.

Next up for Clinton is a home date with MAC rival Muscatine at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Camanche prevails

CAMANCHE — Camanche made its case as one of the top teams in Class 3A when it dominated its home invitational, beating No. 10-ranked Mediapolis twice Saturday. Libby Schnoor, Kylie Vogel and Brettan Hilgendorf led the way for the Indians with all-tournament team honors. It was a successful week overall for Camanche, which finished 6-1 on the week and improved to 11-3 on the season.

The Indians’ only loss came to cross-county rival Northeast, a team Camanche swept earlier in the week. The Rebels got their revenge in a thrilling three-set victory behind solid play from Addie Oberman (eight kills, eight digs) and Baylie Parson (12 digs). The first set played out to a nail-biter with the Rebels taking it 26-24 in a 21-point format. The Indians answered with a 21-13 victory to tie the match at one set apiece, and Northeast responded with a 15-11 clincher.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
