River Kings mix it up against Bulldogs

BETTENDORF -- Without a doubt, Clinton had a difficult task matching up against Bettendorf, Wednesday. During the dual meet at Palmer Hills, the Bulldogs’ home course, both teams decided to switch up the scoring format in favor of a match play style of golf.

It didn’t matter what way the River Kings faced them, the Bulldogs proved superior. In the team scoring, Bettendorf won the nine-hole dual with a combined score of 143; in the official match play scoring, the Bulldogs won all 12 head to head matches against Clinton.

“We played pretty good, but they are just awesome,” Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said. He compared Bettendorf’s golfers to the college level, stating the team could possibly do damage against teams that are a full level of schooling older. “That’s the kind of score you see at the college level.”

However, the high level of play from Bettendorf seemed to bring out the best in Clinton. Nine River Kings shot rounds in the 40s. Jake Luett led the team with a 38; Justin Tomona was second among Clinton golfers with 40 and Ryan Rursch shot a 41.

They were each bested by Bulldogs in match play, though. Nine Bettendorf players scored in the 30s as the team finished 1-under par on the course.

Ryan Berg was the low scorer for Bettendorf with his 35. Four other golfers -- Alex Pohlmann, Mitch Elkin, Brett Gaydos and Jacob Haugaman each shot 36s.

“That’s kind of the way golf seemingly is sometimes,” Niedermeyer said. “You kind of play to your competition. I think that helped us play better. When you’re not playing with guys who don’t play very well, it’s easy for you not to play well.”

Niedermeyer said he was happy his team was able to go into an unfamiliar course and turn out good rounds. The River Kings have two meets left before Districts in October, and the coach said right now the team is in the process of “fine tuning.”
