CLINTON — Sadie Nickles won a pair of individual races, Nikki Erling and Becca Hess won one each and the three of them teamed with Molly Anderson to win the 200-yard freestyle relay Thursday in Clinton’s 113-54 loss to Dubuque Hempstead in girls swimming at the Clinton High Aquatic Center.

Nickles won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 19.44 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 6:09.56, winning the latter race by more than 50 seconds.

Erling earned a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:10.74) and took second in the 100 backstroke. Hess claimed victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.60) and was second in the 200 individual medley.

Erling gave Clinton a 2.3-second lead in the leadoff leg of the 200 freestyle relay. Hess added almost three more seconds to the lead on the second leg before Nickles and Anderson finished off the victory. Clinton won in 1:58.31.

Maddie Marlowe added an individual runner-up finish for Clinton in the 50 freestyle.

Depth was the key for Hempstead. The Mustangs won seven events but also had six seconds and 10 thirds, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 freestyle.
