Cross country: Kaster paces Clinton

---- — CLINTON — Kim Kaster of Clinton and Jackie Kokjohn of Prince of Peace finished in the top 20 Saturday to lead area runners at the Clinton Invitational cross country meet at Emma Young Park.

Kaster captured 15th place, running the 4,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 58.8 seconds, while Kokjohn crossed the finish line in 16:11.3.

Kokjohn is the only runner for the Irish, while Clinton ran just three girls in the varsity race, two fewer than needed for a team score. Central DeWitt was the highest-placing area team, taking 11th with 299 points. Mikayla Coyle (17:23.4) led the Sabers with a 49th-place finish.

Urbandale, fifth in the Class 4A state team rankings, knocked off top-rated Pleasant Valley 35-56 for the team crown. Urbandale put four runners in the top seven, led by 15th-rated Elyse Prescott. She took second in 14:58.5, although that was almost a minute behind champion McKenzie Yanek of Pleasant Valley (14:04.1). Yanek is ranked No. 1 individually in Class 4A.

On the boys side, Clinton ran most of its top runners in the freshman/sophomore race. In that 5,000-meter event, sophomore Michael Peters took second for the River Kings in 18:38.5, while teammate Jonathan Facio placed fifth. As a team, the River Kings placed fourth.

In the varsity boys competition, Central DeWitt placed 12th, Prince of Peace was 13th and Clinton took 14th. Lucas Block of Central DeWitt was the top area finisher, placing 59th in 18:57.9. Next across the finish line was Prince of Peace’s Devin Bly (80th in 19:44.3), followed two spots later by Clinton’s Andre Dunlap (19:46.3).
