Cardinals advance to girls sectional

LENA, Ill. – Erie advanced to next week’s sectional in team competition, and golfers from Fulton, Morrison and West Carroll qualified individually with their placings Wednesday at the Illinois Class A Lena-Winslow Regional meet at Wolf Hollow Golf Course.

Led by a 97 from junior Morgan Newton, Erie shot a team total of 409 to rank behind host Lena-Winslow (367) and Eastland (376) in the team race. The top three teams and top 10 individuals from other teams qualified for the sectional, which will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday on the West Course at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport, Ill.

Senior Lexi Floming and junior Katlyn Weber each shot 101 for the Cardinals, while senior Lindsey Tempelmann rounded out the scorers with a 110. Sera Bebon, a freshman, shot 112, and sophomore Heather Coers shot a 128.

Advancing individually from area schools were West Carroll’s Hayley Guilinger, who shot a 95; Morrison’s Jaden Workman (100); and Fulton’s Mackenna Munson (101). Guilinger and Workman are freshmen, while Munson is a sophomore.

Sophomore Karissa Freidag of Eastland won medalist honors in dramatic fashion by making an eagle in a one-hole playoff with senior Lexi Graf of Lena-Winslow. Each player shot an 80 in regulation.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
