West Carroll loses twice in tournament; Morrison falls, too

Herald Staff Report

ERIE, Ill. — The West Carroll boys basketball team is likely glad they play again Thursday at the Warkins Cardinal Classic because they won’t want to remember Wednesday.

The Thunder lost 59-58 to Knoxville in controversial fashion in an afternoon game and then were beaten soundly by Kewanee Wethersfield 65-35 in an evening contest.

Things seemed to be going well early for West Carroll — the only team to not start tournament play last Saturday. The Thunder led Knoxville 48-35 after three quarters. But then the wheels fell off.

The Blue Bullets scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter, and a 3-pointer by Nolan Lewis gave Knoxville a 49-48 lead with 3:51 to play.

West Carroll retook the lead 51-49 after Jordan Bracero, who scored a team-high 18 points, hit a pair of free throws. But then Lewis drilled a 3-pointer, made a layup and set up Noah Hummel on a fast-break layup to put Knoxville ahead 56-51.

After a timeout, Tommy Losch hit a 3-pointer to pull West Carroll within two points. The teams then traded baskets. The Thunder drew a charge against Knoxville with 10 seconds to play.

Losch tied the game with 5 seconds to play after converting a layup. Lewis took a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer, and the officials called a shooting foul, with no time left on the clock.

Lewis made 1 of 3 free throws to give the Blue Bullets a 59-58 win.

In their other game, the Thunder started well against Wethersfield, and the score was tied at 10 with one minute left in the first quarter. Wethersfield went on a 16-1 run over the next 5:30 to take a 26-11 lead and seize control.

Mustangs fall to Stockton

Stockton built a four-point lead after the first quarter and extended the advantage each period on its way to a 55-40 victory over Morrison.

Alexander Volckmann scored nine points to lead Morrison, while Hunter Hamstra and Kyle Meurs each chipped in eight. Sam VenHuizen scored 12 points to lead four Stockton players in double digits.

Elsewhere

In the other game, Orion and Stark County were tied at 21 after three quarters. But the game really heated up in the final period.

Orion outscored Stark County 22-18 in the final frame to earn a 43-39 victory.

Dylan Schultz scored 11 points to lead Orion, which went 13-of-23 from the free-throw line. Tanner King led Stockton with 10.
