Prep basketball: Irish win first game

CLINTON — Nic Roth made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left that put Prince of Peace on top, and the Irish held off Calamus-Wheatland for a 45-42 win Tuesday night in Tri-Rivers Conference boys basketball.

“We had about a six-point lead and couldn’t put them away,” Prince of Peace coach Gerry Murphy said. “We made steps at the end, though, so it was a good experience for us.”

Roth led the Irish (1-0) with 14 points, while Lucas Laufenberg added 11, making 9 of 14 free-throw attempts.

Josh Poell of Calamus-Wheatland (0-1) led all scorers with 15 points, 11 of them coming after halftime.

Knights beat Faith

FULTON, Ill. — Unity Christian moved to 3-0 on the season by defeating Faith Christian 75-29 on Monday night in boys basketball.

The Knights had five who scored in double digits while holding their opponent to 10 made field goals throughout the game.

Leading the way for the Knights was Colby Dykstra with 17 points, followed closely by Nolan Willoughby with 16.
