Second quarter keys Amboy win

AMBOY, Ill. — While the first half was back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter between Morrison and Amboy, the second quarter belonged to the Clippers as they went on an 11-4 run that allowed Amboy to win 48-30 on Thursday in girls basketball.

Kaitlyn Liebing had six points in the period and ended up with a double-double — 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Amboy held Morrison to no field goals in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, five Amboy players scored, including six points from Sydney Wilhelm. Kennedy Dinges had five steals.

Cardinals top Storm

MANLIUS, Ill. — Despite scoring only four points in the opening quarter, Erie came out with 28 second-half points to knock off Bureau Valley 40-36.

Erie coach Brian Howell realizes that the team came out sluggish but liked how it responded in the second half.

“The girls came alive and and played with a lot of intensity to pull this game out,” Howell said.

Erie got its sixth win, led by Courtney Cobert with 12 points. The Cardinals had a season-best 18-for-26 from the free-throw line.

Prophets now 6-1

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — A strong second quarter enabled Prophetstown to defeat Sterling Newman 47-21 in Three Rivers Conference action Thursday.

In said quarter, the Prophets outscored their opponent 15-4, thanks to nine points from starting guard Corrie Reiley, who ended up with 14.

The third quarter was an even 11-11, but Prophetstown won a defensive fourth quarter 7-4.

Prophetstown won their second conference game and sixth overall in seven outings. It was the first conference loss for Newman.

East Dubuque rolls

SAVANNA, ILL. — It was all East Dubuque on Thursday night, defeating the Thunder 74-29 thanks to a 26-point first quarter while West Carroll could manage to score only four, thanks to baskets from Demi Hess and Abby Maike.

East Dubuque also scored 35 in the third quarter to put the game out-of-reach.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
