For the first 1 1/2 quarters, Clinton played Davenport North even Friday night. That was quite a contrast from the first meeting, when North roared to a sizable lead early.
But, the Wildcats eventually found their stride and went on to beat the River Queens 83-59 in a Mississippi Athletic Conference girls basketball game in Yourd Gym.
North freshmen Jaciana Stowers and Jinaya Houston combined for 58 points.
Stowers (30 points) went wild in the second quarter after a 3-point basket by Elle Tubbs gave Clinton a 23-16 lead. Stowers hit two baskets in a row to pull North within 23-20. The two teams traded free throws before a play that turned the game around.
As Stowers was drilling a 3-point basket that tied the score at 24, teammate Natalia Kirby was fouled inside. Kirby, another freshman, went to the line and made a pair of free throws.
Erin Wenzel answered with two free throws to tie the game again at 26, then Stowers took over.
She started a 13-0 run with another 3-pointer. She added another basket on a drive, a mid-range shot and two free throws before capping the run with a steal and layup to make it 39-26. T’ahja Hicks also made a 3-pointer during the run.
After that, Clinton never got within single digits again.
