Volleyball: Steamers play for a title

PORT BYRON, Ill. — Fulton is finding consistency at just the right time.

After a slow start to the volleyball season, the Steamers have turned things around. Tonight, they face Prophetstown at 7 for the Illinois Class 2A Riverdale Regional title.

“They have stepped up,” Fulton coach Stacy Germann said after the Steamers knocked off second-seeded Riverdale in Tuesday’s semifinals. “It’s been a roller coaster all season, but the talent is here.”

Germann said the Steamers wouldn’t take the Prophets lightly, even though they have beaten them twice this year. Prophetstown entered the tournament as the fifth seed but beat fourth seed Morrison on Monday and top seed Bureau Valley in the semifinals.

“We know they’re scrappers,” Fulton sophomore Betsy Leonard said.

“We’ll have play hard,” sophomore teammate Averi Leitzen said.

“Prophetstown always plays tough,” Germann said. “They don’t give up. We have to be ready for them.”

Erie also plays for a regional title tonight. The Cardinals face Eastland at 6 p.m. in Lanark, Ill.

Clinton makes its debut in the Iowa Class 5A tournament with a home game against Cedar Rapids Kennedy at 7 p.m. Kennedy advanced with a win against Waterloo East.

A pair of area teams play regional semifinal matches tonight in Class 3A. Camanche is a Mount Vernon in Region 6, while Northeast travels to Center Point-Urbana in Region 7. Central DeWitt has a Class 4A semifinal at Cedar Rapids Xavier. All three of those matches start at 7 p.m.

Regional finals is 3A, 4A and 5A are set for Tuesday night.
