Camanche tripped up

MOUNT VERNON — Camanche ran into a roadblock on its postseason path Thursday night.

Eighth-ranked Mount Vernon swept the Indians 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 in the semifinals of the Iowa Class 3A Region 8 volleyball tournament.

“They’re a good team,” Camanche coach Josh Davis said of the Mustangs, who improved to 24-10. “We didn’t play all that poorly. It seemed like we were inches away. We couldn’t get them out of system.”

Davis said the Indians (18-12) were close to forcing a fourth game.

“I thought we had something going in the third game,” he said. “They led the whole time. We were kind of fighting from behind all night.”

Libby Schnoor led the Indians with 14 kills and 13 digs. She had just two hitting errors in 35 attempts for a hitting percentage of .343. Brett Hilgendorf added nine kills, while Kylie Vogel had 28 assists, Lindsey Grams had 11 digs and Morgan Peasley delivered three blocks, all solos. All five of those players are seniors, as are Julia Moore, Jordan Goldbeck, Alison Seibol and Lexi Cundiff.

“We went with an all-senior lineup in the third game, and they showed their resolve,” Davis said. “They (the seniors) performed at a high level on the varsity stage their whole careers. There are a lot shoes to fill.”

Northeast eliminated

CENTER POINT — Northeast saw its season end Thursday with a 25-15, 25-21, 35-18 loss to Center Point-Urbana in the semifinals of the Class 3A Region 7 tournament.

Addie Oberman had seven kills in her final match to lead the Rebels (11-18), while fellow senior Breanne Butler had the team’s two blocks. Junior Baylie Parson led Northeast with 17 digs and the lone ace of the night.

Kennedy Salow had nine kills, and Kennedy Gaffney had eight kills and 13 digs to lead the Pointers (33-9), who are ranked 15th in the Class 3A state rankings.
