Camanche suffers loss after rough inning

WEST LIBERTY — Were it not for one disastrous 11-run inning, Camanche might have come away from the West Liberty Invitational 2-0. Instead, the Indians came away from the weekend 1-1.

Entering the fourth inning against West Liberty on Saturday, Camanche trailed 1-0. The team then had by far its biggest defensive lapse of the weekend. Four of the 11 runs came from the Belles’ Hailey Defauldt, who finished with three hits and a double.

A three-run fifth-inning homer by Camanche’s Kylie Vogel was to no avail, and the Indians started the weekend 0-1 with their 12-3 loss.

Against Davis County, the Indians rallied for a 4-3 comeback victory. Camanche spotted the Mustangs three runs in the second inning and trailed 3-1 entering the fifth.

The bats awoke for the Indians as they scored three runs over the next two innings to rally for the victory. Aside from the second inning, pitcher Morgan Mussmann threw six scoreless frames, allowing seven hits and totaling seven strikeouts in the win.

The weekend improved Camanche’s record to 14-7. The team hosts Calamus-Wheatland tonight at 5 for a doubleheader.

Rebels 1-1 at CP-U

CENTER POINT — Northeast came away from its weekend 17-8 following a 7-1 loss to Center Point-Urbana and a 12-8 shootout win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Saturday.

The Rebels head to Bellevue tonight for a doubleheader against the Comets at 4.

In the opener, Northeast withstood a four-run barrage from Kennedy in the seventh inning. The Rebels opened the game with a 5-1 lead and padded the score with six more runs over the third and fourth innings, making it 11-2. Aleenah Marcucci led Northeast with four hits, including a double, three runs and an RBI. Addie Oberman was 3-for-3 with a double.

The Northeast lineup combined for 16 hits to Kennedy’s 10.

In the loss to the host team, Northeast kept pace in the first inning but failed to score in the final six. Marcucci, again, had a multi-hit game with three and also scored the only Rebel run. But Northeast failed to reach base, drawing no walks and knocking nine hits.
