Doubles lead Indians to title

DAVENPORT — A 1-2 finish in doubles led Camanche to the title of the Davenport Assumption Invitational girls tennis meet Saturday.

Kylie Vogel, last year’s Class 1A state runner-up in singles, teamed with Lindsey Grams to win all six of their sets en route to the doubles title. They beat teammates Taylor Bialas and Brett Hilgendorf 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

“Taylor and Brett played their best match of the day against Kylie and Lindsey,” Camanche coach Erin Montgomery said.

Bialas and Hilgendorf needed to win a tiebreaker in the semifinals to reach the championship match.

In singles, Nicole Nielsen placed fifth for the Indians, while teammate Maddie Parker was seventh. Nielsen bounced back from a 6-2, 4-6, (6) loss to Muscatine’s Nicole Harper in the first round and beat a pair of Davenport West players in the consolation rounds.

“Nicole had a great day finishing fifth in a singles division that had mostly number 1s and 2s,” Montgomery said. “It’s also nice to see Parker’s game improving in each match she plays.”

River Queens win 2

BETTENDORF — Clinton impressed coach Cindy Rasche by beating Iowa City West and Iowa City High in a pair of duals Saturday. The two Iowa City schools also played Bettendorf, a team Clinton had beaten Thursday.

“To bring in three wins (against those teams) was a great thing,” Rasche said. “All three should be in the top eight in the state.”

Junior Shannon Shovlain and freshman Samantha Brisch pulled out the key win of the day. Their 10-4 victory was Clinton’s lone win in doubles against City High, and it gave the River Queens a 5-4 victory. Shovlain also had a dramatic win at No. 6 singles, beating Abbey Vitosh 11-10 (2).

The River Queens (4-0) defeated West 7-2 in its other dual, although there were several closes matches in that dual, too.
