CAMANCHE — David Moore is hoping a 9-0 win against Camanche on Monday is a good indication of what his Clinton boys tennis team can accomplish this season.
The River Kings recorded five shutouts and lost only 13 games total, although Moore said it wasn’t a case of trying to blank the Indians.
“Camanche is a little bit down right now, but we kept good focus,” Moore said. “It’s not so much of whether they give up a game but trying to play every point the best we can. I like to see the kids in that frame of mind. A lot of times it will end up 10-0 that way.
The closest match came at No. 1 singles, where Clinton’s Ryan Schroeder beat Camanche’s Seth Boysen 10-5.
Schroeder, last year’s Mississippi Athletic Conference champion at No. 2 singles, was playing his first match at the top spot this year after beating Jacob Kruse in a challenge match. Kruse took third in the conference at No. 2 singles in 2011.
Moore is confident with either of those players at No. 1
“Both are very good players,” he said. “They’re quite a bit different. Jacob has a variety of shots and no major weaknesses. Ryan is more of a power player.”
Moore said those differences should benefit them in doubles, although they haven’t had much of a chance to practice together because of weather issues. Schroeder teamed with the graduated Mitch Shumacher last year to win the MAC title at No. 1 doubles and then place sixth in the state meet.
Except for Schumacher almost every one returns for the River Kings, although in some different spots this season.
Evan Hood has moved up from No. 4 to No. 3 after taking third in the MAC last year. Tony Hurlburt, third at No. 5 last year, is at No. 4. Vamsi Marla is playing No. 6 this year after taking third at No. 3 singles last year. Rohan Aggarwal has moved into the lineup at No. 5 singles.
“That’s very good experience,” Moore said.
As a result, he is looking for a lot of success this year.
“I think we’re definitely in the running for the MAC title,” he said. “I think we’re one of the top 10 teams in the state.”
