Records fall at Fulton Relays

FULTON, Ill. — Nothing about the weather indicated favorable conditions for record-breaking performances at Tuesday's 67th annual Fulton Relays. Still, five meet records fell.

Erie/Prophetstown was responsible for two of the changes in the record book, and the Panthers won the 12-team competition with 145 points on a cold, blustery evening. Camanche was the runner-up with 96, and host Fulton claimed fourth with 33 points.

Devin Johnson, a senior for Erie/Prophetstown, wasted no time being the first one to rewrite the record book. He leapt 22 feet, 3 inches on his first attempt in the long jump to erase a record that had stood since 1957 when Chuck Runge of DeWitt went 21-11.25. It was the longest-standing record at the meet.

"When I first got here, people told me they expected me to beat it, so I said I'd better," said Johnson, who placed eighth in the state in Class 1A last year after entering the meet with the second-best qualifying distance (22-0.5). "I've been jumping well. I don't know why, but I'm not going to question it."

Johnson's jump gave him the title, but it was short of his personal best (22-11.5). He said he was confident he would surpass 23 feet this spring.

"I want to go 23-6 at state," said Johnson who plans to continue his track and basketball careers next year at Monmouth College. "I don't want to sound full of myself, but I really think I should win it this year."

Johnson and his teammates dominated in the field events, where the Panthers collected 73 points.

Johnson and Darius Owens (20-8) finished 1-2 in the long jump, Ethan Oleson (47-9) and Ryan Blasdell (43-2) did the same in the discus, John Butts was first (135-7) and Oleson fifth in the shot put, Nate Andreas (38-1.5) and Cody Wiemer (37-6) went 2-3 in the triple jump, and Wiemer and Grant Ames tied for third in the high jump at 6-0.
