Grayhounds sweep Kings

BURLINGTON — The frustration and losing continues for the Clinton River Kings.

Clinton opened its busy week by traveling to Burlington, where they dropped both games to the Grayhounds 10-7 in Game 1, then trying to spark something late, but fell short in Game 2, 6-4.

In Game 1, the River Kings got eight hits on Monday, and forced Burlington pitcher Josh Bloomer to walk three hitters.

That didn’t distract Bloomer to his win, though.

Bloomer threw all seven innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out three.

Offensively, Blake Anderson went 3-for-4 for the Grayhounds that included four RBIs that included a home run.

Lead-off hitter Chanse McChesney also hit a homer in Game 1. Lake Rosson had a three-hit game for Burlington as well.

The River Kings tallied 10 hits in Game 2, and had a 3-run fifth inning. Clinton struck out just five times and walked just once. Burlington again needed just one pitcher to get through the game.

Camanche uses defense to split with Cascade

CAMANCHE — The first game of the doubleheader against Cascade involved a lot of offense, but Game 2 was the exact opposite.

The Cougars won the first game 13-4, but the Indians had opportunities to score just as many as their opponent. Camanche tallied 14 hits in the game; half of them were split between Blake Bialas (3) and Tanner Atkinson (4).

Atkinson took the loss on the mound as seven different Cascade hitters took in at least one RBI. Nate Berfield had a team-high three RBIs while having a pair of hits.

In Game 2, the lone run scored didn’t come from a base hit. It came on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning when Derek Harksen was at the plate.

“ We could have come out flat in the 2nd game and let a very good Cascade have their way with us,” said Indians coach Darryl Cochran. “But our kids responded and we go out and win.”
