CLINTON — As Clinton coach Kevin Cunningham points out, everything was working.
The River Kings defeated Davenport Assumption 5-4 on Thursday, thanks to timely hitting from Murray Henricks and Dustin Caldwell.
Both Clinton hitters had two hits, and Caldwell led things off in the first inning with a single, and later scored on a groundout from Jordan Chapman.
Clinton then scored two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning.
Caldwell and Jake Faur led off the third inning with back-to-back singles. Caldwell scored on an error, then Faur scored on a Henricks groundout. Evan Jackson also had a double in the inning.
In the fourth, Austin Driscoll led off with a double to right field. Garret Knutsen singled to advance Driscoll to advance to third base on a 1-2 count. Faur knocked in Driscoll on a sacrifice fly; Henricks brought in the Knutsen, who played catcher while Henricks served as the designated hitter.
“All the hitting was a carryover from the Burlington games,” Cunningham said. “We challenged guys, especially at the bottom of the order, to be more aggressive, and they were. It was good to return and get another win.”
Nick Houzenga threw the first five innings for the River Kings, allowing three runs (all earned) while allowing seven hits and walking two, striking out one. Houzenga threw 83 pitches and 52 strikes.
“He threw really well,” Cunningham said. “He had good command, and forced a lot of groundouts.”
Houzenga forced six groundouts and seven flyouts.
Michael Clark was the bridge that set up Faur. Clark threw 1 1/3 innings, and despite allowing one run, Cunningham was also pleased with Clark’s performance.
“He competed really hard out there,” Cunningham said. “He’s started to compete really strong on the mound.”
