Ansari, Brisch claim titles

CLINTON — Sameer Ansari won five tennis titles and Samantha Brisch, a starter on the Clinton girls teams that have placed first and second in the state the past two seasons, won the Girls 18 Singles title at the two-day Firecracker Tournament at Max Lynn Courts.

The juniors portion was played Thursday and Friday, while the adults are scheduled for Sunday.

Ansari of Clinton defeated Nathan Thoms of Camanche twice to claim a pair of singles championships. Ansari won 10-3 in the Boys 18 Singles Division and 10-4 in the Boys 15 Singles division. Ansari also teamed with Kejaun Brown to win the 18 Doubles and 15 Doubles titles. He combined with Avan Colah to win in Mixed Doubles.

Brisch defeated another River Queen, Justin Lange, 10-4 in the title match. Brisch and Lange also combined to win the Girls 15 Doubles crown, while Lange joined fellow River Queen Colah to win the Girls 18 Doubles title.

Lange won the championship in the Girls 15 division, topping Riley Hubbart, who played No. 6 singles for Clinton High, 10-2 in the finals.

Macey Salone won a close battle for the Girls 12 Singles crown. She defeated Kaylee Camp 11-10 (10-8) in the finals. Camp came back and teamed with Ericka Farwell to claim first place in Girls 12 Doubles.

Brody Marmann was the Boys 12 Singles champion. He also won the Boys 10 division and teamed with Chase Stonestreet to win the Boys 12 Doubles crown.

Madison Haskell won the Girls 10 Singles title without losing a game in her two matches.

Quarterfinals — Caitlynn Thompson def. Amanda Goldensoph 10-2; Justine Lange def. Hannah Birt 10-0; Avan Colah def. Kaitlynn Green 10-5. Semifinals — Samantha Brisch def. Thompson 10-0; Lange def. Colah 10-4. Championship — Brisch def. Lange 10-4. Consolation semifinal — Green def. Goldensoph 7-6 (7-5). Consolation final — Goldensoph def. Birt 6-2.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

    Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
    The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
    The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
    "College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
    Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
    Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
    He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
