Camanche closes Northeast's season (with VIDEO)

GOOSE LAKE — Insurance runs mean a lot for the Camanche Indians.

Camanche (14-18) defeated Northeast (23-15) 5-1 in Class 3A Region 6 softball postseason play Tuesday, and the Indians carry around a little mascot as motivation to keep scoring, even when ahead.

The Indians got some insurance runs, as Camanche scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth (Camanche won the coin toss before the game) thanks to a leadoff double from Morgan Mussmann.

Northeast committed two errors in the inning, allowing Mussmann to score, then Jordan Nissen brought in Bailey Mensinger on a safety squeeze to tack on the fifth and final run.

“That was pretty exciting,” Mussmann said of the double. “I was really pumped up; hitting is contagious in a way, so once I started that, and it was boom, boom, boom.”

Not only did Mussmann spark the late rally, she also threw a complete game two-hitter.

Northeast got a leadoff hit from Aleenah Marcucci in the first inning, then a single in the fourth inning from No. 5 hitter Kelsey Carder. Camanche had a game plan on how to attack Marcucci.

“We knew if we could keep her off the bases, they were going to struggle to score runs,” Camanche coach Erin Schlotfeldt said. “Morgan did a really nice job pitching to her and everyone else; Morgan pitched her heart out.”

Mussmann knew that Marcucci would be a tough assignment.

“We know that she’s going to either bunt most of the time or swing away, so when she did, I usually go high and outside,” Mussmann said. “Whenever she bunts, we’re in pretty close, ready to get her out.”

Marcucci, who ranks 17th in the entire state with a .563 batting average, was 1-for-3 and did not get on base following her leadoff hit.

“We didn’t hit and we didn’t field, and when you don’t do either one of those things, you don’t have much chance of winning,” Northeast coach Travis Eversmeyer said. “It just wasn’t our night.”
