Northeast knocks down Marquette, 7-2

GOOSE LAKE — Tevin Stoecker hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, while Nick Wall and Ketzalli Dondiego also got doubles for Northeast in a 7-2 non-conference baseball win against Marquette Catholic on Tuesday.

Charlie Marcucci had two hits and a pair of RBIs for the Rebels (23-7).

Trevor Schaver threw the first inning for the Rebels and struck out a batter. Dondiego picked up the win after throwing two no-hit innings, also striking out a batter.

“It was great to see the seniors go out with a win on Senior Night,” Northeast coach Tyler Howe said. “Trevor put us in the right direction with a scoreless first inning.”

Wilton downs DeWitt

WILTON — Wilton wasted no time in scoring against Central DeWitt on Tuesday night, as the Beavers won 7-3 in a non-conference matchup.

Wilton put two runs in the first inning on the board off two hits and a wild pitch from Sabers starter Zach Eden. Eden threw four innings, needed 64 pitches to get through those four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.

The Beavers also scored three runs on five hits in the fifth inning.

Jake Maxwell helped get the Sabers on the board on a sacrifice fly that scored Max Steffens.

DeWitt scored two more in the sixth inning — Steffens brought in courtesy runner Gabe Fuller on a single, then Emmit Enyeart scored on a fielder’s choice when Eden was at-bat.

Sabers, Mustangs split

DEWITT — Central DeWitt split a WaMaC Conference doubleheader with Mount Vernon on Monday, winning the first game 3-1, then falling in the nightcap 7-1.

In Game 1, Emmit Enyeart had two RBIs in a 3-for-3 game. All three of his hits were singles.

Grant Henning had an RBI triple in the first inning that scored T.J. Sikkema.

Max Steffens took the win for the Sabers, as he threw 79 pitches in his seven-inning performance by allowing a run on five hits along with striking out six hitters.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
