Regional play begins today

CLINTON — Calamus-Wheatland destroyed Camanche’s hopes of a Big East Conference softball title Wednesday. Now, the Warriors will see if they carry the momentum into the postseason.

Calamus-Wheatland (10-19) is the first area team to begin regional play.

It travels to Springville (13-21), which beat the Warriors early in the season, for a first-round game in Class 1A tonight.

Area Class 2A and 3A teams kick off the postseason Tuesday.

Camanche and Northeast both host 3A quarterfinal games at 7 p.m., and if Camanche (19-12) beats Davenport Assumption (18-22) and Northeast (22-11) defeats West Liberty (14-15), they will face each other at 7 p.m. Friday in Goose Lake.

Camanche, which lost 1-0 to Cascade on Friday, split games with Assumption early in the season.

Bellevue (8-26) opens the 2A Region 4 tournament with a 7 p.m. game at North Linn (16-17) in Troy Mills on Tuesday.

Preston (14-15) and Big East Conference champion Marquette Catholic (21-10) open play in Class 1A on Wednesday, with both hosting quarterfinal games.

Marquette gets the Springville/Calamus-Wheatland winner, while Preston entertains the winner of tonight’s Midland/Central City game.

Postseason for Class 4A and 5A teams starts Thursday. Central DeWitt (24-16) and Maquoketa (20-15 heading into a doubleheader tonight) are at home for 7 p.m. games in the opening round of Class 4A, while Clinton travels to Davenport for a 7 p.m. game at Davenport West (23-15) in 5A.

The River Queens (3-21) closed the regular season against the Falcons on Friday, losing 14-3 and 12-1, running their losing streak to 13.

Taylor Altemeier led the River Queens with a pair of 3-for-3 games at the plate, including a double in game.

Halee Vicks added two hits in the 14-3 loss, while Cara Brewer, Sydney Davis and Jenna Stremlow had RBIs. In the other game, Grace Dornbush drove in the lone run for Clinton.
