Boys basketball roundup: Erie, Morrison fall at Warkins

ERIE, Ill. — Knoxville outscored Erie 9-2 to end the first quarter and led the rest of the way en route to a 48-31 victory Friday night at the Warkins Cardinal Classic boys basketball tournament.

Sean Maloney scored on a baseline drive to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead with 5:47 left in the first quarter, but Knoxville scored the next nine points. A 3-point basket by Tyler Houston from just right of the top of the key put Knoxville on top to stay.

Houston led Knoxville with 19 points, while teammates Andrew Hale and Noah Hummel added 15 and 14, respectively.

Kenneth Cole and Owen McConnell each scored eight points to lead Erie.

Morrison loses

ERIE, Ill. — Trevor Lay popped in 34 points to lead Kewanee Wethersfield past Morrison 78-51 on Friday at the Warkins Cardinal Classic.

Wethersfield outscored the Mustangs in each quarter.

Kaleb Church led Morrison with 18 points, and Hunter Hamstra added 14.

In other games Friday:

• Peoria Heights 63, Orion 45: Lauren Henderson and Ron Willis each scored 21 points to lead the winners. Three Chargers reached double digits, led by Christian Allen with 18. Strong starts in each half keyed Peoria Heights. It outscored Orion 13-4 in the first quarter and 21-10 in the third.

• Stark County 42, Lena-Winslow 41: Logan Hollis scored 16 points to lead Stark County. Hank Holm led Le-Win with 13.

• Bureau Valley 46, Mercer County 33: The Storm outscored Mercer County 17-2 in the second quarter to take control. Parker Neuhalfen led Bureau Valley with 19 points, while Brandon Butcher scored 14 points for Mercer County.

• Stockton 66, Riverdale 62: Stockton outscored Riverdale 17-14 in the fourth quarter and 10-6 in overtime to pull out the win. Sam VenHuizen scored 22 points to lead the Blackhawks, who also got 14 from Reese VanderHeyden and 10 from Trey Timpe. Four Rams scored in double digits, led by Josh Lohman with 19, Cole Solomon with 17 and Jake Gellerstedt with 15.
