Iowa high school football championships Xavier routedin 4A title game

St. Edmond (13-1) brought the stingiest defense in 1A, giving up only 7 points a game. But the fourth-ranked Gaels were no match for the highly skilled Regals (14-0), who joined Solon as the only schools with four straight championships.

The Regals’ winning streak also is the longest current run in the country. Ithaca (Mich.) takes a 55-game streak into a semifinal playoff game today.

Riley Dixon sped through a huge hole in the right side of the line en route to a 33-yard touchdown on Regina’s seventh play of the day, and that set the tone for the game.

Jake Brinkman swept around the right end on a 4-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter and Cook shed a tackler in the backfield on a 5-yard TD run a little more than 5 minutes later.

Cook, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound junior who runs nearly as well as he throws, is the son of Regina coach Marv Cook, the former University of Iowa and NFL tight end who’s now 88-5 at the school.

Regina has won the past two 1A championships after taking 2A crowns in 2010 and 2011. The Regals’ last loss was to Solon in the 2009 2A quarterfinals.

With his five extra points, Regina’s Jacob Adam set a state record with 105 kicking points this season.

It was the first championship game appearance for St. Edmond and its 83-year-old coach, Dick Tighe, the state’s career victory leader with 413. Sophomore T.J. O’Tool rushed for 119 yards to lead St. Edmond, which committed four turnovers.

Kuemper wins 2A

CEDAR FALLS — Adam Schleisman kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired Friday to give Carroll Kuemper Catholic a 31-28 victory over Waukon and the Class 2A state championship.

Schleisman’s kick, only the third field goal he had tried all season, hit the crossbar and bounced through. It was a fitting finish to a game that matched two first-time finalists and was filled with big plays.

Kuemper (14-0) had tied the game at 28 on Cole Neary’s 58-yard pass to Alex Drees with 3:14 left. It was the second TD catch for Drees, who also intercepted four passes to tie the all-class championship game record.

The Knights responded 64 seconds after Waukon (12-2) had gone up 28-21 on Parker Hesse’s 5-yard quarterback sneak on a fourth-and-inches play.

Neary threw four touchdown passes in all, going 16-of-36 for 289 yards.
