River Kings light up the Day

HERALD STAFF REPORT
The Clinton Herald

---- — DAVENPORT -- Clinton continued its strong season in boys track and field, taking first place Thursday at the Jesse Day Relays on the final day of qualifying for the Drake Relays.

The River Kings scored 138 points. Solon edged Davenport Central 120-119 for second place in the eight-team event.

“We did very well and won the meet,” Clinton coach Tony Smith said. “The boys competed hard, and we saw a lot of good results on the final qualifying day for the Drake Relays.”

Even though the 400-meter dash is not one of the races on the Drake schedule, Clinton senior Deshond Robinson ran it as if it were. Robinson, the defending Class 4A state champion in the event, broke the meet record as he turned in a 48.96-second lap around the Brady Street Stadium track. Marquis Robinson was right behind him in second place in 51.63.

Deshond Robinson’s time was the second-fastest in the state this season behind a 48.76 by Jase Grant of Dubuque Senior.

Robinson also won the 200 in 22.46, while Marquis Robinson was third in 23.06. Deshond Robinson also was second in the 100 behind Connor Ham of Solon, with Clinton teammate Barrion Collins taking third.

“Deshond had a great night again,” Smith said. “We anchored him in the four-by-100 instead of the four-by-400 to get a better time for Drake and the four-by-100 came through.”

Robinson was far from the only River King to shine, though.

Nate Harden won the discus with a heave of 156 feet, 5 inches and was second in the shot put with a personal best of 52-5.5.

The Kings also enjoyed a successful day in the hurdles events.

Stephen Baca, DJ Ludemann, Justin Guilliams and Delante Chamberlain combined to win the 440-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 1:01.34, Chamberlain was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles and Baca and Chamberlain finished 2-3 in the 110 hurdles.

Marquis Robinson, Eric Maddasion, Chamberlan and Quavon Jones won the 1,600 relay in 3:32.17, while the Kings also took second in the 400 relay and third in the 800 and sprint medley relays.

“Nathan Harden threw well again and improved both his shot put and discus, and he will earn a trip to Drake in both,” Smith said. “Delante Chamberlain and Stephen Baca had great nights running the hurdles and lowering their times. Marquis Robinson ran well in the open 200 and 400, while Eric Maddasion, Barrion Collins and Quavon Jones helped the relays.

“We scored in all the running events and a lot of times scoring two people in some events.”

The River Kings have a big week next week, hosting the 94th annual Gateway Classic on Tuesday before heading to Drake later in the week.

“We still have some work to do, and we have to keep focused on the end-of-the-year goals and getting better,” Smith said. “We qualified for the Drake Relays in the 100, shot put, discus, four-by-100, four-by-200 and four-by-400 relays. It will be nice to take a lot of kids to see a great sporting event in the Drake Relays.”

River Queens take 6th

DAVENPORT -- Kim Kaster led the Clinton girls to a sixth-place finish at the Jesse Day Relays by winning the 1,500-meter run in 5:12.42. The River Queens scored 52 points in the nine-team meet that was won by Davenport Assumption with 141.

Kaster also finished second in the 3,000. Assumption’s Elizabeth Mallon won the race in 10:59.45, with Kaster right behind at 11:01.78. The third-place runner was more than 16 seconds behind Kaster.

The River Queens scored 21 of their points in the field events, earning points in all four of them.

Erika Hammond was fourth in the shot put (36-8.25) and fifth in the discus (105-2), Elle Tubbs claimed fourth in the high jump (4-10), Raven Jones took fifth in the long jump (15-6.5) and Alayna Geronzin was sixth in the discus (98-1).

Clinton also scored points in five of the relays. The Queens were fifth in the 3,200, sixth in the 800 sprint medley and 1,600 distance medley, seventh in the 400 and eighth in the 1,600.

Harksen leads Indians

DUBUQUE -- Derek Harksen of Camanche led the area runners by placing second in the 100 meters Thursday at the Harold Sweet Invitational hosted by Monticello.

Harksen’s time of 11.32 was edged by an 11.29 from Nate Karlan of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Camanche teammate Easton McDaniel placed fourth in the race in 11.60.

Will Seeser placed fourth (53.02) and Jeremiah Jones (53.52) was sixth for the Indians in the 400.

Harksen also anchored sixth-place finishes by the Indians in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays. Camanche added an eighth in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Eli Kaczinski was third in the 3,200 in 9:39.76, lowering his school-best time for the third time in a week. Monticello’s Michael Melchert, who won the race, is the only Class 2A runner in Iowa with a faster time than Kaczinski this season.

Kaczinski also anchored a third-place finish for Northeast in the 1,600 distance medley relay in 3:45.20. Northeast also took sixth in the 3,200 relay.

Nick Kennicker placed fifth for the Rebels in the 400 hurdles (59.05), and Nick Anderson was sixth in the 800 (2:05.38).

Jace Michels led Bellevue with a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 58.25, while Robert Schroeder took a fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.75), Andrew Meyer took sixth in the 3,200 (10:08.36) and Tyler Banowetz placed sixth in the long jump (20-1.25). The Comets were seventh in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Rebels 2nd at Tipton

TIPTON — Northeast continued its momentum this season by finishing second with 94 points Thursday at the Tipton Tigerette Relays. Camanche tied for ninth with 26 points.

Mount Pleasant won a close three-way battle for first place, finishing two points ahead of Northeast with 96 points. Mount Vernon was third with 90.

The meet was the final meet before the Drake Relays, and Aleenah Marcucci was aiming to lower her time for the 400-meter hurdles.

Marcucci said earlier this week that she would like to lower her time to 1:05 by the end of the season, but her time Thursday wasn’t her season best.

The sophomore’s fastest time is 1:07.58 on April 11, and on Thursday, Marcucci ran a 1:07.85, and it was the best time.

But does it fit the Drake Relays cut-off?

In the 400 meter hurdles, the top eight runners get to run on the blue oval. Marcucci (as of Thursday night) was ranked 11th in the state and still second in Class 2A. Marcucci has a top-32 time in the 100 hurdles, so she will run in that race in Des Moines. Marcucci also won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.73 seconds.

Meanwhile, Tierra Hildebrandt had the fastest time — 13.13 seconds — in the 100 dash. She won the dash in a full tenth of a second ahead of Monticello’s Rachel Gadient.

Northeast also had the fastest sprint medley relay at 4:32.59 while Camanche finished sixth (4:57.19).

The Rebels had two in the top eight during the 3,000 meter run. Junior Mariah Casey finished fourth at 11:48.55, while freshman Maddie Kaczinski came in at 11:59.06.

For the Indians, senior Libby Schnoor won two events. First, she won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet even ahead of Davis County’s Jaylynn Sharp by 1 inch. Then, Schnoor had the fastest 800 run at 2:30, 1 second faster than Hannah Kilburg of Northeast. Camanche’s Syrene Ball finished seventh with a time of 2:42.50.

Panthers win title

EDGINGTON, Ill. -- Erie/Prophetstown led the seven-team field at the Rockridge Lady Invitational, winning the team title by a wide margin with 183 points. Monmouth-Roseville was a distant second with 97.

Erie/Prophetstown swept the relays, winning the 400 in 52.05, the 800 in 1:51.31, the 1,600 in 4:23.44 and the 3,200 in 10:27.19.

Sisters Courtney and Rachel Cobert also combined for three wins in individual events.

Courtney Cobert won the 100 in 13.26, while teammate Heather Strike was third in 13.72.

Rachel Cobert won the 200 and 400 dashes for the Panthers.

She won the 200 in 27.38, with teammates Courtney Kruthoff (28.75) and Mikayla Bolton (30.45) taking third and fifth. Cobert’s time in the 400 was 1:00.13, with teammate Brooke Remley taking fourth in 1:09.22.

Junior Corrie Reiley was the runner-up in the 1,600 in 5:53.08, behind winner Sydney Brokaw of Mercer County (5:45.53).

The Panthers also had three scorers in the high jump -- Maddie Fringer second at 4-10, Kruthoff third at 4-10 and Bolton fifth at 4-8 -- the 800 -- Reiley third (2:32.37), Rebecca Arnolts sixth (2:41.31) and Kassi Henrekin seventh (2:44.72) -- the 3,200 -- Emily Hanover fourth (13:03.44), Olivia DeWitte sixth (13:36.05) and Chance Johnston seventh (13:58.31) -- and the 100 hurdles -- Fringer fourth (18.71), Shyan Dessing fifth (19.95) and Erin Heflin sixth (21.13).

The Panthers went 2-3 in the pole vault with Ashlynn Steel (7-6) and Allisa DeShane (7-0). Rachel Cobert (34-5.5) and Dessing (29-4) went 3-4 in the triple jump. Dessing took third (53.06) and Bolton was fifth in the 300 hurdles (54.57). In addition, Alyssa Howell was third in the shot put (33-8.5), Ashley Cooney took sixth in the discus (82-8) and Avery Simester was sixth in the long jump at 11-6.
