Vogel takes success to a different court

CLINTON — Kylie Vogel is one of those student-athletes who brings success to whatever platform she steps on.

For example, she was a driving force in Camanche’s near-state tournament drive this past basketball season, and she’s trying to get back to the state level in her current sport — tennis.

Vogel made it to last year’s state tournament in doubles competition with long-time friend Lindsey Grams, and lost in the state championship match to Waterloo Columbus’s Lindsay McGonegle/Lindsay McManus.

“I’ve always had a really good connection with Lindsey on the court,” Vogel said. “We’ve been playing together for so long that we kind of know what each of us is going to do.”

Camanche coach Erin Montgomery agrees the chemistry between Vogel and Grams is what makes them a difficult pair to beat.

“It depends on the day, but Kylie meshes so well with Lindsey,” Montgomery said. “That was a close championship match they played last year, and part of it is because of their chemistry.”

Vogel has been playing tennis since she was 8 years old, and even though Montgomery didn’t see Vogel at that young of an age playing, Montgomery was still impressed at first sight.

“I knew she would be talented,” Montgomery recalls. “She brings a lot of experience playing for that long. Over that time, she has become so knowledgeable and she’s even to correct her own mistakes.

“She’s been able to knock off higher seeds, and she definitely is able to rise to the occasion,” Montgomery adds. “Her game is a lot better against girls who hit harder, because that helps her return game.”

Vogel adds that she is able to self-coach herself.

“I’m able to motivate myself whenever I need it,” she says. “Coach Montgomery tells me things every once in a while, which is nice, too.”
