Jones powers Steamers

CLINTON — Ethan Jones had a lot of run support as the Fulton Steamers beat Riverdale 13-6 as part of a Three Rivers Conference baseball doubleheader at Ashford University Field.

Jones struck out 12 Rams while walking just two hitters and allowing two earned runs.

“I threw strikes and felt dominant tonight,” Jones said. “I had some good defense behind me, and I didn’t have to worry about it as much.”

Fulton scored six in the fourth inning that sent 13 Steamers to the plate. Four consecutive Fulton hitters reached base, highlighted by a Cody Huff two-run double that almost left the park in far left field.

The Steamers tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning, thanks to seven reaching base. Fulton tried to force defensive pressure on the Rams, and it worked with Riverdale committing eight errors.

“We got that nice big lead in the fourth, and I thought Ethan threw really well, too,” Fulton coach Kyle Miller said. “I thought Ethan pounded the zone with a lot of strikes. He got ahead early, and that curveball was there.”

Jones threw 98 pitches to 25 hitters and hit the strike zone 63 times.

Miller also pointed out how big of a treat it was to cross the Mississippi River and play at a minor league stadium.

“It’s a great venue,” he said, “and the kids were excited to come over here and play.”

E/P wins on 2-hitter

CLINTON — Ethan Howard threw a two-hitter for the Erie/Prophetstown Panthers during a 6-0 Three Rivers Conference win against Sterling Newman at Ashford University Field.

It was Howard’s third win of the season as he threw all seven innings and struck out 10 Newman hitters while walking five.

While Howard did not allow any hits, he had two hits offensively, matching teammate Kallen Jepson’s pair of hits. Each player also hit a triple. Owen McConnell had two RBIs.
