Batting blitz boosts Fulton

FULTON, Ill. — Fulton wasted no time jumping on Amboy and never let up Friday, drilling the Clippers 14-0 in a Three Rivers Conference baseball game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

“One of our better efforts this year,” Fulton coach Kyle Miller said.

Fulton did all of its offensive damage without the benefit of an extra-base hit. The Steamers did take advantage of four Amboy errors, however.

“I feel we are peaking at the right time,” Miller said.

The Steamers put the game out of reach almost immediately, scoring seven times in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the second.

Trey Simmons got things going with a one-out walk, and he stole second base. Ethan Jones singled and Paul Velasco was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Devon Ballard brought two runs home with a single, then Cody Huff walked to reload the bases. Velasco scored when Jake VanZuiden reached on error, Colin Housenga brought another in with a sacrifice bunt and Huff scored the fifth run on another error.

Seth Sanderson finished off the inning with a two-run single.

The Steamers (9-11, 5-4 conference) did all their damage in the second with just two hits. A walk, two hit batsmen and two errors hurt the Clippers.

That was plenty of support for Ballard, who tossed a three-hit shutout with strikeouts and just one walk.

“Devon Ballard threw really well for us, as he has really year,” Miller said.

Rockets shoot past EP

CLINTON — Rockridge used a four-run fourth inning to break open a close game, then sealed a 10-2 high school baseball victory against Erie/Prophetstown with a five-run sixth inning Friday at Ashford University Field.

Ethan Howard drove in both runs for the Panthers (8-8), and Jordan Chandler had two of E/P’s five hits against Rockridge all-state basketball player Ethan Happ.
