Nine join 2nd class

CLINTON -- Clinton High School athletic director Gary Lueders announced the school's second athletic Hall of Fame class Thursday, and the group of nine offered some differences from the 14 inductees in last year's inaugural class.

Eight of the nine are being honored for their athletic prowess -- whereas the first group included four coaches and two contributors in addition to athletes -- and the class of 2014 also includes the first three women inductees.

"There was some questioning as to why there were no women in the first group," Lueders said. In part it was because of the 10-year waiting requirement after athletes graduate, in addition to the fact that the school's athletic history goes back a century and girls sports have been offered just a fraction of that time.

The first three women entering the Hall are Sharon Kramer-Bredehoft (1982 graduate), Patrea Johnson-Aeschliman (1987) and Shauna Geronzin-Green (1998). They join former male athletes Hubie Norman (1941), Harold "Red" Lutz (1948), Ron McDevitt (1958), Chuck Curtis (1970) and Kevin Sorensen (1980), along with Ken Kroemer, who is being inducted as a contributor.

"There is a lot of excitement tying in the inaugural class to this field," Lueders said. "This class will make Clinton proud, as well. The committee has done a good job of addressing a number of eras. They did a good job of recognizing some good athletes."

Like last year, this year's induction ceremony will take place in conjunction with the first home football game (Sept. 5 against Davenport North).

"This class represents a good cross section," Lueders said. "There are two more prominent swimmers (Norman and McDevitt) who were part of the tradition Howard Judd started. Sharon Kramer still holds three school records in track, Patty Johnson was a four-time state champion in gymnastics, Shauna Geronzin was an outstanding multi-sport athlete, Red Lutz was part of the 'Firewagon Five,' Sorensen was a Dan Roushar (an inaugural Hall of Fame pick) type who was a multi-sport athlete, Chuck Curtis tied the state record in the 440(-yard dash) and Ken Kroemer started the Clinton Junior Football program in 1971, was active in the Booster Club and chaired the Restoring Royalty fund."
