---- — DAVENPORT — Deshond Robinson recorded another sweep of the sprint races Thursday and led Clinton to a third-place finish at the Mississippi Athletic Conference boys track and field meet at Brady Street Stadium.

“We knew if we were going to score points in the conference, you’ve got to go with individual events for him,” Clinton coach Tony Smith said, noting that team points were awarded the same in individual events as team events (10 for first place, 8 for second, etc.).

The highlight for Robinson was his win in the 400 meters. The defending state champion in the event recorded a time of 48.91 seconds, his fastest this year and the second-best time in the state this spring. Robinson also won the 100 meters in 11.31 seconds and the 200 in 22.22. Pleasant Valley’s Tyler Flanders was the runner-up in all three races.

Pleasant Valley won the team title with 173.5 points, while Muscatine edged Clinton 123.5-117.5 for second place.

“We thought we could have gotten second,” Smith said.

Brady Ernst returned to competition after being held out of several meets because of injury, and he won the title in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.

“It was nice to have him back,” Smith said. “He was focused on the high jump.”

Other highlights for Clinton were second-place finishes by senior Nathan Harden in the shot put and the discus — his toss of 52-11.5 in the shot put was a season best — having two runners score points in all three sprint races; Stephen Baca and Delante Chamberlain finishing 3-4 in the 110 hurdles; Chamberlain taking third in the 400 hurdles; getting a fifth from rookie high jumper Derrick Howard (5-6); and getting runner-up finishes in the 800, 1,600 and shuttle hurdle relays.

“The seniors did a great job,” Smith said, noting the efforts Robinson, Harden, Baca, Chamberlain and Eric Maddasion and Dustin and Alex Caldwell in the relays.

The River Kings also took second in the sophomore conference meet. Pleasant Valley won that one with 165, while Clinton’s 107 points were four more than North Scott.

“We had a lot of kids run varsity and still got second in the sophomore meet,” Smith said. “And we beat the freshman-sophomore record in shuttle hurdle relay. In that one, Gage Harris, Theo Harris, Trajae Lackland and Derrick Howard won in 1:04.98, bettering the MAC record of 1:07.2 set in 2009 by Davenport West.

The sophomores also got firsts from Marquis Robinson in the 100 (11.72) and Barrion Collins in the 200 (23.32); seconds from Justin Horst in the 400 hurdles (1:02.01), Theo Harris in the high jump (5-2) and Justin Guilliams in the long jump (18-7); and thirds from Xavier Mooney in the 400 (55.61), the 400 relay unit (47.22) and the 1,600 relay unit (3:50.37).
