River Kings 3rd after Day 1 of MAC meet

ELDRIDGE — It was a third-place kind of day on the courts for the Clinton boys tennis team Thursday.

The River Kings sat in third place after the opening day of the Mississippi Athletic Conference tournament, and three Clinton singles players and all three doubles teams were set to play in third-place matches today.

Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley reached the finals in all of the singles and doubles flights and were tied for first place with 18 points. Clinton had 6.5, followed by Davenport Assumption (6) and Muscatine (5).

“If you look at the standings, we are ahead of three teams that beat us in the regular season,” Clinton coach Jonathan Mitchell said. “It’s common for teams to idle a bit toward this time of year or peak too early, but I’m so proud that the River Kings are constantly improving. They honestly have a never-say-lose attitude.”

Rohan Aggarwal (No. 2), Semeer Ansari (No. 5) and Colin Nelson (No. 6) each won opening-round matches before losing to Pleasant Valley players in the semifinals. All three were to play for third place today. Aggarwal dropped the first set 6-2 but came back to win the next to 7-6 and 10-4 against Sean Baldwin of Assumption in his opener.

“Rohan Aggarwal’s come-from-behind victory over Assumption’s Sean Baldwin was a classic battle,” Mitchell said. “Rohan is always more concerned about the team than himself. During timeouts, he kept asking how his teammates were doing rather than focus on himself. Little did he know that his win lifted us above Assumption in the team standings.”

Aggarwal and Evan Hood opened doubles with a 6-1, 7-5 win, but then lost to Bryce Brien and Michael Perubcin of Bettendorf 6-1, 7-6 in the semifinals at No. 1 doubles.

Cyrus Colah and Connor Nolan opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Thomas Corbin and J.K. Houghton of Davenport Central before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Abhishek Gowda and Charlie Humes of Pleasant Valley in the semifinals at No. 2 doubles.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
