E/P wins title in TRAC track

EDGINGTON, Ill. — Erie/Prophetstown swept the four relay races, Rachel Cobert won a pair of individual titles and sister Courtney Cobert won another as the Panthers won the Three Rivers Conference girls track and field title Friday at Rockridge High School.

The Panthers scored 137.5 points to outdistance Bureau Valley by 43 points. Amboy was third with 86.

Morrison placed seventh with 38.5 points, while Fulton/Fulton Unity took ninth in the 14-team field with 29 points.

Averi Leitzen of Fulton/Fulton Unity won the title in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 44.49 seconds, beating Amboy’s Megan Grady by almost seven seconds. Grady, in turn, won the 1,600, with the Steamers’ Jordan Price finishing second.

Chelsea Lesniewski of Fulton/Fulton Unity placed third in the shot put.

Brandi Hosford placed second in the triple jump (34-8.25) for Morrison, while teammate Kassidee Church earned thirds in both the long jump (15-1) and 100 hurdles. Hannah Blacklock scored points in both hurdles events for the Fillies.

Rebecca Johnson placed in all three sprint races for the Fillies. She was seventh in the 100 and eighth in the 200 and 400 races.

Rachel Cobert’s wins came in the 200 and triple jump. Her time of 27.02 seconds in the 200 was one-tenth of a second ahead of runner-up Lindsey Hoffert of Bureau Valley. She beat Hosford by more than a foot in the triple jump, with a best effort of 36 feet, 1.5 inches.

Courtney Cobert claimed first in the 100 in 13.47 seconds.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

    Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
    The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
    The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
    "College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
    Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
    Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
    He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
