---- — CLINTON — Clinton began its defense of the Iowa Class 2A girls tennis team state championship Saturday by beating Davenport West 5-0.

The win sent the River Queens to the Region 3 semifinals this Saturday in Eldridge. They will play host North Scott at 9 a.m., with the winner advancing to the 1 p.m. final against either Davenport Central or Ottumwa.

Jordan Nelson was the lone River Queen to lose a set against West. She dropped the opening frame 3-6, but she won the second set 6-2 and the super tiebreaker 10-4 over Tessa Daily.

Griffin Rasche defeated Abby Moore 6-2, 6-1 in which she had control of the match throughout.

Samantha Brisch, Gabby Haan and Shannon Shovlain also won their singles matches as well without much trouble. The meet was decided before sixth-flight match was finished, and doubles also weren’t needed since the match outcome was decided.

“These were good confidence boosters for the girls,” Clinton coach Cindy Rasche said. “Any of the girls can beat anyone if they keep their heads in check.”

Before team competition resumes, Clinton will host the individual regional tournament Thursday at Max Lynn Courts.
