Maquoketa's Vandemore finishes third in Class 4A

AMES — Maquoketa’s Allison Vandemore held her position on the second day of the Iowa Class 4A girls golf state tournament and captured third place in the medalist race.

The senior followed up a first-round 81 with an 83 on Tuesday at the par-73 Ames Golf & Country Club. Her 164 put her eight strokes behind runner-up Grace Winker of Cedar Rapids Xavier and three strokes ahead of Megan Joerger of Charles City. Xavier’s Maddie Bertsch earned medalist honors with a 74-75—149.

Vandemore started the second round on the first hole. She parred No. 1, then made four consecutive bogeys before shooting a double-bogey on the 400-yard, par-5 sixth hole. She closed the front nine par-double bogey-par for a 44.

As she did in Monday’s first round, Vandemore made a pair of birdies on the back nine Tuesday. They came on the 400-yard, par-5 15th hole and the 315-yard, par-4 18th. She also birdied No. 18 on Monday. Vandemore also had four pars, two bogeys and a double bogey on the back for a 39.

Lexi Delaney of Central DeWitt also climbed up the leaderboard Tuesday. She shaved nine strokes off her first-round score, shooting a 92 that gave her a 193 total. That allowed her to jump from 31st to 25th in the final standings.

Delaney’s round included pars on Nos. 1, 3, 10, 15, 16 and 18. She had just three pars Monday.

Xavier won the team title with a 691, finishing 55 strokes ahead of runner-up Charles City.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
