Warriors spoil it for Indians

CAMANCHE — Led by Abagale Pewe’s pitching and one swing of her bat, Calamus-Wheatand played the role of spoiler in Big East Conference softball Wednesday.

Pewe belted a three-run home run in the first inning and was the winning pitcher, recording the final out with the tying run on second base, as the Warriors defeated Camanche 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Indians were looking for a sweep that would have given them a share of the final Big East Conference title. Instead, they were swept, losing 3-2 in the second game, too, as Marquette Catholic claimed sole possession of the crown. Marquette, which split with Camanche on Monday, finished 12-2 in league play. Camanche finished 10-4, a game ahead of Northeast and Preston, each 9-5.

Pewe got the first game off to a bang for Calamus-Wheatland (10-19, 6-8 Big East) as she slugged a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the first inning. The Warriors extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth before the Indians made things interesting.

Camanche (19-11) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, then rallied again in the seventh. Allie Lefebure singled with one out, and Jordan Goldbeck walked with two outs. Lindsey Grams followed with a single to left field. Lefebure raced to the plate and slid home safely, and the throw allowed Goldbeck and Grams to advance to third and second, respectively.

That brought up Kylie Vogel, Camanche’s second-leading hitter with a .333 average entering the game. She connected with a Pewe pitched and launched a fly ball to medium-deep center field where it was caught by Jalen Snowbarger for the final out.

Calamus-Wheatland completed the sweep by breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Linn-Mar beats Queens

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
