Indians take 2 against the Irish

His luck ran out in the sixth. Bialas drove in two runs with a single, extending the Camanche lead to 5-1, the final margin.

The Indians again didn’t waste any time scoring in Game 2. Harksen led off with a single on the first pitch he saw and was later driven in, along with Boysen, on a single from Mensinger. By the end of the first, Camanche was up 4-0.

Prince of Peace starter Jon Weisner issued eight walks, which had a hand in the other five runs he allowed. He was lifted in the middle of the second for Devin Bly, who got the Irish out of the inning without any more damage.

Walks, wild pitches and passed balls were the Irish’s Achilles’ heel on the night. In the second game alone, Prince of Peace walked 13 batters and saw numerous balls go to the backstop, putting runners in scoring position or plating them.

The second inning started off with three straight walks, and all three scored by the time the third out was tallied. The big blow came off the bat of Tanner Atkinson, who knocked in two with a double.

The only inning of the game that Prince of Peace was able to get through without a baserunner was the third, but that trend did not last.

“Our approach is we’ve been always practicing try to stay patient, stay back and hit the ball up the middle and the other way,” Cochran said. “I think the kids did a pretty good job of that tonight.”

The fourth inning saw two more runs cross the plate for Camanche as Jacob Peasley delivered two of his four RBIs in the game on a single. That put Camanche up 9-3 heading into the fifth, which would become the final inning.

The Irish brought in Nic Roth to pitch the fifth against the Indians, and he walked the first batter he saw in Mensinger. Camanche then knocked two straight RBI-doubles, making it 11-3 Indians. An error at second base allowed the 12th run to score giving Camanche the nine-run lead. Peasley came up to the plate and smacked a single to left-center to push Camanche over the top to end the game with the 10-run rule.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
