Boys golf Freshman Luett leads Clinton in Burlington

BURLINGTON — Clinton freshman Jake Luett has already made splashes after just two golf competitions this year. He took an 18th overall finish Friday at the Muscatine Invite which featured 72 golfers. On Monday, when the River Kings squared off against Pleasant Valley and Davenport West at host Burlington’s Invitational, Luett fired an 81, good for fourth overall.

Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said Luett’s age can be deceiving.

“He’s played a lot of golf over the years,” Niedermeyer said. “It’s not a total surprise... He’ll get in the 70s as the season goes on. There’s no question.”

Luett was the top Clinton scorer at the Spring Hollow Golf Course. Pleasant Valley’s Marshall Lamb was the invite medalist with a low round of 72, followed by teammate Erron Vandemore’s 74 and Burlington’s Jared Hoelzen with a 75. Fellow River King Ryan Rursch finished 11 strokes off the lead with an 83, second among Clinton golfers.

Other scorers for Clinton were Justin Tomona (93) and Aaron Henry (95). Koby Cleary (98) and David Orte (103) were not counted among team scorers.

The combined 352 team score gave the River Kings a third place finish. Pleasant Valley took the team title with 318 and Burlington was second with 330.

Niedermeyer said the team targeted 340 for its goal.

“Today, I think we got into some trouble,” he said. “This is a difficult course. We had to count two scores in the 90s.”

Luett and Rursch (a senior) have both finished near the top in Clinton’s first two meets. The River Kings, on the whole, are expecting new faces to come into the fray this season.

“Ryan has some experience coming back,” Niedermeyer said. “But the rest of them don’t have much varsity experience. By and large we’re kind of feeling it out.”

He added the Mississippi Athletic Conference as a whole is very deep. The River Kings are aiming to finish in the top half of the MAC.
