---- — DAVENPORT — Playing with the top golfers from the other teams, Clinton High freshman Jake Luett responded by tying for medalist honors Wednesday and led the River Kings to a second-place finish at a boys golf quadrangular meet at Duck Creek Golf Course.
Pleasant Valley won the team title with a 151-stroke score. Clinton followed at 156, and both North Scott and Central were within six strokes of the River Kings.
"It's not a super difficult course, which evens things out," Niedermeyer said. "I was pretty pleased with the play today."
The golfers played the back nine Wednesday, and the Kings shot a 154 on the course's front nine in a meet last week.
"Our previous 18-hole best was 338, and if you double this (156) that's a 312," Niedermeyer said.
"Right now we're looking for improvement, and that's what we're doing. We have a pretty solid six-man rotation."
Luett and North Scott's Cory Hughes each shot 1-over-par 36s to tie for top honors in the meet hosted by Davenport Central.
"I stuck him in at the number one spot, and he responded real well for a freshman," Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said of Luett. "He almost had a hole-in-one on one hole; he was only about four inches away. He beat out the (Erron) Vandemore kid from PV, who I think is the best player in the conference.
"It doesn't faze him (Luett) a bit (playing the top competition)."
Ryan Rursch recorded Clinton's second-best score, a 38, while Aaron Henry's 40 and Justin Tomona's 42 rounded out the team scoring.
"That was Henry's best round," Niedermeyer said. "Ryan had another good, consistent round. He had a double bogey on 16 but bounced right back with a birdie on 17."
Clinton is back in action next Wedneday at the Davenport Assumption Invitational. That meet begins at 9:30 a.m. at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport.
