Clinton consistent at Lancer

PARK VIEW — Four Clinton River Kings shot in the 80s Monday, a promising sign for golf coach Paul Niedermeyer early in the fall season. All four scores at the Glynns Creek Golf Course were top-25 finishes out of 60 players during the Lancer Varsity Boys Invitational. They meant a sixth-place (338) standing for Clinton.

Niedermeyer was pleased with the overall results but is hoping the River Kings can continue to improve.

“(We) shot our low 18-hole score of the year and counted four scores of 85 and under, so that certainly was an improvement,” he said. “However, we still are looking for those one or two really good scores that would put us over the hump.”

Clinton was two strokes behind Davenport Central for fifth place and six strokes away from Davenport Assumption for a top-four finish. Bettendorf won the event with a 303 team score, followed by Pleasant Valley’s 309 and Muscatine’s 311. The Spartans’ Erron Vandemore blew away the competition, medaling with a 69. Vandemore finished three strokes ahead of second-place Alex Pohlmann of Bettendorf.

Ryan Rursch and Justin Tomona of Clinton tied for 21st with a team-low 84. They were followed by teammates Jake Luett and Aaron Henry, both of whom scored 85s and tied for 24th. Jordan Ready (92) and Koby Cleary (94) rounded out the River Kings, but their scores were not counted in the team total.

“We just need to keep improving and good things will happen for this group,” Niedermeyer said. “Right now, it is all about patience and improvement, and only hard work will get that done.

“Once again, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley and Muscatine showed that they are simply head and shoulders above everyone else in our conference,” Niedermeyer added.

The River Kings’ junior varsity team was led by Zach Drury’s 20th-place finish with a round of 100. The River Kings placed fifth with a 411 team total.
