High school cross country: Off and running

(Continued)

The top 10 of the freshman/sophomore race was loaded with area runners. Andrew Kilburg, a freshman at Easton Valley, placed eighth (15:57.37), while Northeast’s Colton Galusha (15:59.78) and Connor McDonald (16:10.65) took ninth and 10th.

The Assumption girls showed why they are ranked third in the preseason Class 3A state rankings, as they captured the top five spots, and 10th place, in the girls varsity race.

Kaster broke into a group of three girls from Dubuque Senior, ranked 15th in Class 4A. She took seventh in 16:35.46.

“I just wanted to run faster than last year,” said Kaster, who accomplished that by about a minute and a half. “I think it sets me up quite nicely. I’m excited now.”

Kokjohn exceeded her goal, too, taking 11th in 16:48.21.

“I was trying to get under 17 minutes; that was my goal,” she said. “I thought it was a good time. I got a good start, and I kept up with them good.”

SCHOOLHOUSE OPEN

No team scores were kept. Because several runners were not identified, only area runners’ finishes are listed.
