Erie rallies for Warkins win in OT

ERIE, Ill. — After facing a 16-point halftime deficit, Erie waged a big second-half comeback Friday at the Warkins Cardinal Classic girls basketball tournament.

Knoxville led the host Cardinals 31-15 after two quarters behind 17 points from Tessa Jones. Erie held Jones to five second-half points as the Cardinals won 49-48 in overtime.

The Cardinals halved the deficit by outscoring Knoxville 11-3 in the third quarter and tied the game at 44 after regulation. Erie won overtime 5-4.

Courtney Cobert and Rachel Cobert each had double-doubles, grabbing 10 rebounds a piece. Rachel Cobert led the Cardinals with 18 points, 13 in the second half. Courtney Cobert scored 11 points, six after halftime, dished out five assists and had five steals.

Erie will play Monmouth-Roseville for third place tonight at 6 in the Annex Gym.

Morrison falls short

Chelsea Eads hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to get Morrison’s first win at the Cardinal Classic as the Fillies fell to Ridgewood 59-55.

Morrison led by two after the first quarter and trailed by one at halftime, but could not make a second-half run. The Fillies quieted Ridgewood’s Ashley Collins after the first quarter, when she scored 12 of her 20 points.

Taylor Brooks scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half for Ridgewood.

Lakin Goodman added nine points and Adrienne Banks chipped in eight for Morrison, which plays at noon today for 11th place.

Elsewhere

In other pool play games Friday:

Beth Meier scored 20 points to lead Rockridge to a 54-41 win over Galva.

Only eight players scored in Mercer County’s 40-37 win over Bureau Valley. Mercer County was led by 12 from Bridget Anderson, while the Storm got 15 poinrs from Nicole Bornsheiure.

Sarah Hansen scored 23 points to lead Kewanee Wethersfield to a 60-37 win over Monmouth-Roseville and a berth in the title game tonight at 6 p.m. against Knoxville. Kodi Hammer added 19 for the Flying Geese, while Destiny Smith led Monmouth-Roseville with 14.
