MORRISON, Ill. — Freshmen Brooke Stralow and Emma Sitzmore hit grand slams Tuesday and Morrison improved to 3-0 with a 16-2, five-inning victory against Princeton in high school softball.
Starting pitcher Allie Wiersema struck out eight batters over four innings before Stralow finished the victory.
Lauren Pannier also hit a home run for Morrison, while senior catcher Chelsea Eads hit two doubles, a triple and a single, and another freshman, Lauren Rice, had four singles.
Morrison returns to the diamond today against West Carroll in Thomson, Ill.
Thunder rally for win
SCALES MOUND, Ill. — West Carroll scored three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Scales Mound/River Ridge 13-10 on Tuesday in Northwest Upstate Illini Conference softball.
"We just kept battling throughout the game," West Carroll coach Don Mathey said. "Sabrina Buckwalter came off the bench with two outs in the top of the seventh to put us ahead 11-10."
Darby Rumler doubled with one out in the seventh and moved up on a wild pitch. One out later, she scored on Buckwalter's single. Abby Maike followed with another single, then winning pitcher Cassidy Rice followed with a two-run single.
"Cassidy Rice then came through to shut them down in the bottom of the seventh," Mathey said.
Scales Mound/River Ridge took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, getting a two-run double from Nicole Ties. West Carroll pulled even in the top of the second, getting a two-run single from Janessa Larson.
A five-run second put Scales Mound/River Ridge back on top, but the Thunder (2-4, 2-1 conference) came back with two runs in the third and four in the fourth to go ahead 9-8. Run-scoring singles by Ties and Morgan Jakel tied the game and put SMRR (0-3, 0-1) back ahead in the bottom of the fourth before West Carroll tied it at 10-10 in the top of the fifth.
