---- — THOMSON, Ill. — West Carroll coach Don Mathey just couldn't deny the fact that the opponent was simply better on Wednesday.
Morrison defeated West Carroll 15-3 in five innings on Wednesday. The Fillies scored in all five innings, including putting up six in the third inning, but just one in the first inning thanks to an RBI triple from Chelsea Eads. Despite that, the Thunder held Morrison to just five hitters.
Eads went 3-for-3 on the afternoon.
"Morrison is just a super team," Mathey said. "I thought we played about as well as we could. They are just that much better than us; they are way more fundamentally sound."
West Carroll scored its three runs in the first inning on three straight singles started off by Anna Badtke. Monica Smith and Brianna Kampmeier were the other two who singled.
Morrison followed in the second inning by getting its first three hitters on-base, and all three of them scored, but Emma Sitzmore broke the rally open on a two-RBI triple.
In the third inning, Morrison sent 10 hitters to the plate. Two of the first three hitters were retired on groundouts, but freshman Lauren Rice started the 6-run succession with a single, and then the next five hitters reached base. Just one of those hits were for extra bases — Brooke Stralow doubled before Allie Wiersema hit into a groundout.
Rice also made her longest pitching appearance of her early career, throwing two innings. She struck out five batters and walked one.
Lauren Pannier gets the winning decision for the Fillies, however, on a three inning outing where she allowed the three runs early. Pannier also fanned four and walked one.
"They have at least five excellent pitchers and all nine hitters are excellent, "Mathey said.
Abby Maike takes the loss for the Thunder pitching the whole way allowing 12 earned runs on 13 hits while striking out two and walking four hitters.
