Girls basketball: Irish fall on the road

Area roundup

WYOMING — Midland built a lead in the second quarter and maintained it the rest of the way for a 55-47 win against Prince of Peace on Tuesday in Tri-Rivers Conference girls basketball.

Alaina Martensen scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the first half for Midland (4-0). Briana Schurbon and Morgan Petersen added 10 apiece.

Midland scored in the final minute of the first period to take a 12-11 lead, then used a 7-1 run midway through the second quarter to create some separation in the score en route to a 26-19 halftime lead.

“We have a lot of growing to do as a team,” Prince of Peace coach Scott Maddasion said. “Tonight, we didn’t execute things that were under our control, and down the stretch that made it difficult for us to be successful. We came out hard the first three minutes, but we were not able to sustain that intensity throughout the game. We made a strong push at the end but just weren’t able to close in.”

Sydney Laufenberg scored 10 points to lead the Irish (1-4).

Easton Valley rolls

PRESTON — Easton Valley warmed up after a slow start and defeated Calamus-Wheatland 55-26 on Tuesday in Tri-Rivers Conference girls basketball.

Hannah Bormann (11 points) and Lizzie Meier (10) led the River Hawks to their second win in three games.

Easton Valley trailed 7-5 midway through the first quarter but closed the period on a 7-4 run. The River Hawks then outscored Cal-Wheat 17-6 in the second quarter.

Sabers top Cardinals

MAQUOKETA — Central DeWitt outscored Maquoketa 7-2 in overtime Tuesday for a 40-35 win in WaMaC Conference action.

Amanda Brainerd led the Sabers with 18 points, scoring 10 in the second half. Miranda Meland finished with 12. Chiara Atienza led Maquoketa with 15.

Comets move to 4-1

STANWOOD — Carly Rubel scored 18 points, Ali Reeg added 16 and Mariah Steines tossed in 12 to lead Bellevue past North Cedar 52-40 in River Valley Conference play.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
