Boys basketball: Indians stunned by last-second 3

CAMANCHE — The losses that hurt the most are the ones teams know shouldn’t have been a loss.

Camanche had a one-point lead with under 30 seconds to go until luck changed hands in favor of the Monticello Panthers on Tuesday night.

Camanche ran into a case of misfortune when a shot inside the paint looked as if it could have gone in, but the ball came back out, allowing the Panthers to get one more scoring opportunity.

It didn’t seem as if momentum had shifted yet, but when the clock stopped with 2 seconds left, everything shifted away from the Indians.

Monticello’s Sawyer Herman hit a 3-pointer that put the road team up by two, 46-44, and that was the final score, giving Camanche its third loss of the season.

“We just had some lapses at some bad times, and when you play a good team like that, you can’t have those lapses,” Camanche coach Josh Davis said.

Camanche’s biggest lead was also in the fourth quarter, when it led 36-29, but as any coach in the River Valley Conference will tell you, no lead is ever safe.

“That was a good battle our guys put on tonight,” Davis said. “I thought we defended very well, rebounded like we needed to and had some seniors step up when we called on them, so I was pleased with that.”

One of those seniors who stepped up, Seth Boysen, scored 11 points for the Indians, seven of which came in the second half.

Leading scorer for Camanche was Brody Lodge with 17 points. The junior combo guard-forward had two big 3-pointers that allowed the Indians to stick with Monticello, which got their third win of the season.

Dylan Busse scored eight points with two baskets a half.

“Now we have to forget about this one and prepare for a good battle on Friday,” Davis said.

That battle will be with North Cedar at 7:45 p.m. Friday in Camanche.
