Preston plays the spoiler in Big East

PRESTON — Preston put a dent in Northeast’s hopes of winning the Big East Conference baseball title Monday, handing the Rebels a pair of losses.

Northeast, which entered the doubleheader a game ahead of Lisbon in the conference standings, lost the first game 10-0 in five innings before Preston scored five times in the final two innings to complete the sweep with a 5-2 victory in Game 2.

“We have gotten away from our identity of playing every pitch and doing the little things right,” Northeast coach Tyler Howe said. “We have to start doing the little things again if we want to win.”

The Rebels (16-6, 11-3 Big East) didn’t do much at all in the opener, collecting just one hit. In the second game, Jared Henfrey took a shutout, and a 1-0 lead, into the sixth inning, but Preston struck for three runs. The Rebels got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Trojans added two insurance runs in the seventh.

Camanche earns split

CAMANCHE — After succumbing to a 5-3 Calamus-Wheatland comeback win in the opener, Tanner Schreiner made sure Camanche came away with a split, throwing a complete game in a 5-4 win in Game 2.

“Schreiner had six strikeouts and three walks,” Camanche coach Darryl Cochran said. “He did a nice job keeping their hitters off balance.”

Schreiner also had an RBI to help the Indians (5-19, 4-12 Big East) build a 5-0 lead. Jesse Everhart added two hits and two RBIs for Camanche.

The Indians built leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the opener, but Calamus-Wheatland scored in each of the last three innings to win.

With the game tied 3-3, the Warriors loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with back-to-back-to-back walks. Nick Houzenga followed with an infield hit to score the go-ahead run.
