High school softball Late runs sink Steamers

FULTON, Ill. — Sterling Newman scored three runs over the final two innings Monday and defeated Fulton 4-1 in a Three Rivers Conference softball game at Drives Park.

Jaimie Hurd, Jenna Stevens and Sarah Walls drove in runs for the Comets.

The Steamers (3-2, 0-2 conference) got 11 hits and three walks off Newman pitcher Laura Turnroth, but they could manage just the one run, on an RBI by Morgan Wierema.

Fillies win twice

MORRISON, Ill. — Allie Wiersema pitched Morrison to a pair of wins and batterymate Chelsea Eads drove in six runs Monday as the Fillies swept a doubleheader from Riverdale in the Three Rivers Conference.

Wiersema struck out six batters and shut out the Rams in the opener. Eads had a pair of singles and drove in two runs in the 3-0 win.

Eads had three hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs as Morrison (8-2, 4-0 conference) won the second game 8-4. Wiersema struck out seven batters.

Sadie Mosher, the losing pitcher in both games, hit a solo home run in the second game.
