Upper weights power Sabers

DEWITT — Drew Schroeder says Central DeWitt’s upper-weight wrestlers aren’t too worried if they have to make up ground when it’s their turn to step on the mat in dual meets. Even with 2013 state qualifier Jake Feldpausch out for the year with a knee injury, most of the Sabers’ experience comes from 145 pounds and up.

“We never like to start a dual at 106 because we have a lot of freshmen (at the lighter weights),” Schroeder said. “We’re always in it because we count on our upper weights for bonus points and not to give up bonus points.”

The Sabers showed their strength at the upper weights Thursday by beating Vinton-Shellsburg 37-28 and Camanche 54-24 in a triangular meet on their home mat. Vinton-Shellsburg defeated Camanche 42-27 in the other dual.

In both wins, though, Central DeWitt was forced to come from behind.

“I wish some of our upper weights could have had matches,” Sabers coach Ed Vance said. “You can’t give up that many points off the bat and expect to pull it out every time.”

Freshman Tyler Bossom started the Sabers with a win against Vinton-Shellsburg when he beatt Connor Miracle 5-3 in the opening bout at 106 pounds. But, the Sabers trailed 21-3 when they got to senior Emmitt Enyeart at 145 pounds.

“I feel pretty confident once we get that high (in weights),” Schroeder said.

Enyeart is a returning starter, and the Sabers got a boost when senior Jake Kagemann (160) returned to the sport after a year away. Schroeder (170) and Chase Kraklio (182) follow, and both came close to earning trips to the state meet last year as juniors. Feldpausch’s injury prevented DeWitt from having a state-qualifying anchor in the upper weights at 195, but the Sabers still have two more seniors, Riley McDowell and Doug Hayen, at the top two weights.
