Cascade defense stymies Camanche

CAMANCHE — By the time Camanche figured out a successful way to attack Cascade’s defense, it was too late.

Held to six points in the first half Tuesday, the Indians made things interesting after intermission but saw their eight-game winning streak end with a 29-24 loss to the Cougars, who are rated second in the Iowa Class 2A state girls basketball rankings. Camanche is No. 9 in 3A.

Cascade implemented an impenetrable defense early, forcing a 10-second backcourt violation off the opening tip-off. Even when the Indians (10-3) broke the Cascade press, they had trouble in their half-court offense.

Camanche’s lone score in the first quarter was a turnaround jumper by Julia Moore on the block. By that time, Cascade already had a lead it didn’t lose.

Abby Hunt’s 3-point basket opened the scoring at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter, and Abbey Meyer turned a long defensive rebound into a layup 23 seconds later for a 5-0 lead.

Cascade built its lead to 10-2 after one quarter and 20-6 at the half. Moore had all six Camanche points. Camanche outscored Cascade 11-6 in the third quarter and 7-3 in the fourth.

Oberman leads way

CLARENCE — Addie Oberman scored 20 points and Alyssa Roth added 12 to lead Northeast past North Cedar 52-38 in the River Valley Conference.

Oberman had 12 at the half while Roth had 10 in leading the Rebels to a 32-17 lead.

Sabers edged

DEWITT — Central DeWitt rallied from a 10-point deficit to pull even, but Anamosa scored the lone points the final minute to pull out a 40-38 victory Tuesday in WaMaC Conference girls basketball.

Amanda Brainerd keyed the comeback. She finished with 26 points for the Sabers, scoring all but four of their second-half points.

Anamosa led 19-17 at the half and outscored DeWitt 13-5 in the third quarter. The Sabers closed within 36-32 on a 3-point basket by Kali Roling midway through the final period but trailed 38-32 with four minutes left.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
