Not ready to play

CLINTON — It started as if the Prince of Peace girls just came out a little slow. By the end of the first quarter, Irish coach Scott Maddasion knew his team being down 21-2 was too much to overcome.

“We didn’t come ready to play tonight, and Saturday was a direct reflection of that,” Maddasion said. “We just refused to execute the things we worked on in practice.”

Midland defeated Prince of Peace (6-8; 3-4) 54-18, including starting the game on the 21-2 tear that Halee Vicks broke up with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter. Becca Divarco hit two free throws in the second quarter.

“We stress to the girls that we want to come out with a sense of urgency, but we came out flat tonight,” Maddasion said.

“It was all lack of mental effort and focus. Our girls are physically able to compete with anyone else in this conference, so our performance tonight was disappointing to say the least.”

The Irish hit just six field goals in the game, including scores from Jackie Kokjohn, Karli Atkinson, Hunter Chapman and two baskets in the paint from Erin Kuehn, who led Prince of Peace with four points.

Kokjohn’s basket came in the second quarter with 4:17 remaining. The score at the time was 21-4.

All three field goals in the third quarter, the two from Kuehn and a mid-range jumper from Atkinson, came after the halfway point of the period, all within 1:17.

Hunter Chapman scored the team’s lone field goal in the fourth quarter, then Miranda Schnier and Andrea Aquilani made two free throws each to close the book on the 18 points.

“(Midland) came out and beat us by eight points last time out, so obviously they’re a good team, but we didn’t put up as good of a battle tonight as we did at their place,” Maddasion said.
